Sperm Shortage Leads to Online Advertising
Fertility clinics in Australia are restoring to online advertising following massive shortage in donor sperms.
Matters have come to head in New South Wales where there are less than 10 registered sperm donors for 24 IVF clinics in the state, most of whom have been forced to close the books on a number of couples eager to make avail of donor insemination.
Things have also not been helped by new laws which demand potential donors to be on a state-held register while Victorian donors should have police and child protection order checks.
Professor Michael Chapman who is a spokesman for the Fertility Society of Australia, said that there is a waiting period of at least a year before a sperm donor can be obtained for individual parents.
“We've got a serious problem in a shortage of donor sperm. We have a waiting list of 12 to 18 months to obtain a sperm donor for an individual patient approaching us, so if you came to me tomorrow I couldn't offer you sperm till 2011. So if you are 38 that's significant, because your fertility in the next 12 months is probably going to drop 12 to 15 per cent”, he said.
