Study Links Oral Surgery And Increased Heart Attack Risk

A new report in the Annals of Internal Medicine suggests that the risk of a cardiac event like heart attack or stroke increases in the six months immediately following oral surgery.
According to a research team from the U.K.'s London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine, bacteria and inflammation associated with dental work may cause the connection.
For the study, researchers reviewed the health records of 32,060 patients who had cardiac events and then, after accounting for other risk factors like obesity and smoking, checked to see how many had undergone oral surgery before the event.
They found that 650 people suffered heart attacks and 525 suffered strokes after undergoing dental procedures such as tooth extraction.
"These findings provide further evidence to support the link between acute inflammation and the risk for vascular events," lead researcher Caroline Minassian tells WebMD. "The short-lived adverse effects are nevertheless likely to be outweighed by long-term benefits of invasive dental work.
