High Levels of Salt Found in So-Called Healthy Salads

An analysis of popular salads available in supermarkets, restaurants and fastfood outlets has found that almost four in five so-called health salads contain salt levels that were higher than in a packet of crisps.

The survey was carried out by researchers at Consensus Action on Salt and Health (CASH) who analyzed over 650 pre-prepared salads and found that around 77 percent of them contained very high levels of salt, while some of them contained almost 6g of salt, which has been recommended as the maximum daily intake.

'Grand Chicken Caesar Salad' from Pizza Express was found to contain the highest levels of salt, around 5.3g, while Nando's 'Mediterranean Salad with Chicken Breast' had 4g of salt. "Whilst salad itself is both healthy and tasty, food manufacturers and restaurants continue to add unnecessary salt to the dish, which not only alters the taste and makes you feel bloated, but more seriously, can lead to high blood pressure - the main cause of strokes and heart attacks", CASH's Sonia Pombo said.
