For the first time ever, researchers have discovered that cucurbitacin B (found abundantly in cucumbers) powerfully suppresses prostate cancer. First, this compound potently killed prostate cancer cells in vitro by disrupting a key enzyme required for growth and survival (ATP citrate lyase). And when mice were given cucurbitacin B, their prostate tumors were a stunning 79% smaller than untreated mice after 31 days. Cucurbitacin B is a powerful anticancer compound and in other lab studies has also been shown to potently suppress breast, lung, and pancreatic cancer, as well as leukemia and neuroblastoma. Since this research is so new, no population studies have yet been done to see if men could benefit by eating cucumbers. However, several studies have shown that women may significantly reduce breast cancer risk by eating cucumbers. Greatest benefits are seen with daily consumption of cucumbers (over 34% risk reduction), but significant protection is still seen at two servings weekly (15% risk reduction). Men looking to reduce their prostate cancer risk should therefore consider eating cucumbers at least twice weekly and if possible every day, keeping in mind that the best results are always expected with an overall healthy, balanced diet with plenty of organic fruit, vegetables, whole foods and herbs.
