Yogi Cameron: A super role model for yoga and ayurveda

Some of the best news loosed on Indian-Americans looking to 'take back' yoga and ayurveda from the West has to be the emergence of Yogi Cameron as a star therapist. Cameron, who was known as the first male supermodel and is longtime chums with Madonna and Ellen DeGeneres , is keen to 'give back' to Kerala by showcasing the state from where he learnt his skills as a ganglion of the Indian faiths.
"Kerala has such a rich history of knowledge and successful medical stories, but the world is missing out on a tremendous culture," he says.
Kerala has named Cameron, whose real name is Cameron Alborzian , as a goodwill ambassador to promote yoga and ayurveda. The noble intent apart, he has other credentials for the job.
For one, Cameron provides dollops of celebrity quotient to the promotion of Kerala. In an earlier avatar, he was a supermodel who walked the runway for brands such as Valentino, Versace, Chanel and Dior. He was eye candy for magazines such as Vogue and Elle. His colleagues then were no less than Naomi Campbell, Christy Turlington and Kate Moss . He counts Karl Lagerfeld and John Galliano as friends. Besides DeGeneres' show, he has also appeared in The Dr. Oz Show and Access Hollywood .
Cameron is giving finishing touches to a documentary about two Americans who visit India to receive treatment and overcome "typical western diseases like insomnia and nervous disorders" with what else, ayurveda and yoga.
The fealty to Kerala makes him a kind of misfit in an American pack who have made the Indian methods their own, igniting protests from groups such as the Hindu American Foundation and raising questions as to 'who owns yoga?' "There is a lot more to yoga than what we know in the West," he says. Cameron, 44, has also authored a book, The Guru in You, which introduces readers to yoga and ayurveda.
