The Scientific Case for Medical Cannabis: A Better Healing Alternative to Some Pharmaceutical Drugs

Scientific Findings on Medical Cannabis

• “The medical literature on marijuana goes back 5,000 years. In a 1999 study commissioned by the White House, the Institute of Medicine reported, ‘nausea, appetite loss, pain and anxiety . . . all can be mitigated by marijuana.’ In its April 2003 issue, the British medical journal The Lancet reported that marijuana relieves pain in virtually every test that scientists use to measure pain relief.”
• Cannabis provides a treatment option for individuals who do not respond or respond inadequately to the therapies currently available.(

• “Marijuana's therapeutic uses are well documented in scientific literature. Recent scientific studies have confirmed what has been reported to us by hundreds of people living with HIV - that marijuana can be safely used to reduce nausea and vomiting, stimulate appetite, and promote weight gain. Marijuana is widely recognized by physicians specializing in AIDS care as an important component of treatment…”

• Opiates such as morphine and codeine are the most commonly used drugs for acute pain, but often result in debilitating side effects like nausea, sedation, and dependency. Cannabis can provide similar treatment without these adverse side effects.

• More than 6,500 reports and journal articles support the use of cannabis as medicine, including studies commissioned by the US government, which currently does not support legalization.

• "Eighty-five percent of the BPG [Berkeley Patients Group] sample reported that cannabis has much less adverse side effects than their prescription medications. Additionally, the top two reasons listed by participants as reasons for substituting cannabis for one of the substances previously mentioned were less adverse side effects from cannabis (65%) and better symptom management from cannabis (57.4%).”

• The DEA's Administrative Law Judge, Francis Young: "In strict medical terms marijuana is far safer than many foods we commonly consume.”

• In a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled study, cannabis was effective in reducing pain and sleep disturbance in patients with multiple sclerosis. Other studies have produced similar results, particularly proving the efficacy of marijuana in treating spasticity and pain.

• Marijuana has been shown to have anti-oxidant properties and actually inhibits the growth of tumors.

• “Smoked cannabis was well tolerated and effectively relieved chronic neuropathic pain from HIV-associated sensory neuropathy.”

• There is evidence that cannabis use among Hepatitis C patients who are undergoing treatment has been beneficial by helping them maintain adherence to the challenging medication regiment.

• Numerous public health organizations support the medical use of cannabis, including the AIDS Action Council (1996), the American Academy of Family Physicians (1995), the American Academy of HIV Medicine (2003), the American Cancer Society (1997), the American College of Physicians (2008), the American Medical Association (2009), the American Nurses Association (2003), the Association of Nurses in AIDS Care (1999), the American Public Health Association (1994), the California Medical Association (1997), Crescent Alliance Self-Help for Sickle Cell (1999), the Federation of American Scientists (1994), the Gay and Lesbian Medical Association (1995), the Institute of Medicine (1999), Kaiser Permanente (1997), the Lymphoma Foundation of America (1997), the Multiple Sclerosis California Action Network (1996), the National Association for Public Health Policy (1998), the National Association of People With AIDS (1992), the National Institute of Health (1997), among many others.

Health Conditions Treated with Medical Cannabis

If cannabis were discovered today, it would be considered a medical wonder-plant. Patients suffering from a variety of conditions have found that specific strains of medical cannabis are often a more effective treatment than expensive pharmaceutical drugs produced by large corporations. As an alternative to traditional pharmaceutical pills and their many debilitating side effects, medical professionals have prescribed medical cannabis for a wide variety of conditions, including:

• Cancer
• Anorexia
• AIDS
• Glaucoma
• Chronic Pain
• Arthritis
• Insomnia
• Migraines
• Anxiety
• Depression
• Headache
• Nausea
• Epilepsy
• Asthma
• Premenstrual Tension
• Withdrawal from other drugs
• And many other conditions

Important note: Cannabis will have variable effects when used by different people and under different circumstances. You must discuss indications and side effects with your doctor. SPARC cannot offer medical advice and makes no claims as to the efficacy of medication obtained through our dispensary. Please read the “Sensible Cannabis Use” section of your member handbook for more information.

Russian Lawmakers Debate a Bill About Parenting

Russian lawmakers will in February debate a bill that could see homosexual couples lose custody of their children, parliamentary documents showed Wednesday.
Russian Lawmakers Debate a Bill About Parenting
The debate will likely coincide with the 2014 Winter Olympic Games in Sochi which have already been marred by boycott calls over Russia's controversial new anti-gay legislation. The bill, published on the website of Russia's Duma lower house of parliament, says the state can strip parents of custody if they practise "non-traditional sexual relations," the term used in Russian laws to describe homosexual relations. Russia's homosexual community has feared such a measure ever since President Vladimir Putin in June signed a "gay propaganda" law which sparked international condemnation. Pop singers Madonna and Lady Gaga and openly gay British actor Stephen Fry also heavily criticised the law, which bans the disseminating of information about homosexuality to minors. In a note explaining the parenting bill, lawmakers said the proposed amendment to the family code was in line with the "propaganda" law. "Harm to the child's psyche is great if one of the parents practises sexual contact with the same sex," the note says. The author of the bill, Alexei Zhuravlyov of the United Russia ruling party, has cited a controversial study on gay parenting conducted in 2012 by conservative US professor Mark Regnerus. The New Family Structures study claimed that adult children of lesbian mothers reported lower income and poorer health than children brought up by heterosexual couples. However many peer reviews said its results were inconclusive. Last month, when the Russian bill on parenting was first proposed, Regnerus himself criticised it as a "political project" that would harm children, in an article for US news website The Atlantic Wire. In an interview with Slon.Ru last month, Zhuravlyov said that "exposing" homosexuals would be easy enough once their children were in school. "Homosexuals should not bring up children," he said. "It brings more harm than an orphanage." Russia does not allow gay marriage or civil partnerships. It has also banned adoption by gay couples from foreign countries. The existing grounds for depriving parents of custody in Russia include chronic alcoholism, abuse and abandonment. The decision to move a child out of the family and into a children's home is taken by a court.

Study Reveals Why We Cannot Accurately Judge Our Friends' Behavior

Study Reveals Why We Cannot Accurately Judge Our Friends' BehaviorNew research suggests that it is prudent to think twice before allowing people who know each other to be in positions to judge each other."In judging people we already know, we are more or less unable to ignore our previously established images of those people," says Daniel Leising of Technische Universität Dresden. The new study, published today in Personality and Social Psychology Bulletin, examines how real people evaluate the behavior of themselves, their friends, and strangers. Psychologists know that people hold a number of biases when evaluating others, but most studies to date on this issue have used written descriptions of the behavior of hypothetical persons. "This is one of the few studies that investigated judgments of people's actual behavior," Leising says. Leising and colleagues recruited pairs of friends for the study, asking them first to describe each others' personalities and then several days later, videotaped them participating in standardized, challenging situations in the lab. The tasks ranged from answering general knowledge questions, such as "How high is Mount Everest?," to a role-playing exercise in which participants had to call a "neighbor" (played by an actor) and demand that she turn down the volume on her stereo, to telling a joke of his or her own choice. The participants, their friends, and strangers then evaluated the videotapes, each about 90 seconds long. "This way, we could compare different views on the exact same behaviors with one another," Leising explains. "If different people watch the exact same videotapes but interpret them differently, then the different interpretations may not be rooted in what they just saw, but must be explained in terms of something else." The research team found that they could predict how participants would judge their friends' behavior based on what they thought of them in advance, even before watching their videotaped behavior. "By statistically controlling for strangers' ratings of the same behavior, we could show that there are two kinds of systematic bias in such behavior judgments," Leising says. First, we judge the behavior of people we know in ways that are consistent with our general attitude toward them, so we attribute positive qualities to the behavior of people we like. Also, we judge people we know to match our specific impressions of them: For example, if we think of someone as being generally talkative, we will judge that person to be more talkative in specific situations beyond what a stranger would see in the very same behavior. "We really like to have our images of persons be consistent," Leising says. "This is probably beneficial in terms of arriving at an overall image that is representative - for example, if the person's behavior in a situation is very atypical, we could discount it as an exception and not let it influence our overall image of the person much," Leising says. That representative image then allows us to predict people's future behavior. Additionally, he says that the tendency to idealize our friends might serve as a "social glue" that increases social cohesion. "In our evolutionary past, that probably constituted a major advantage in terms of survival." But the flip side, Leising says, is that in specific situations, we are not able to objectively evaluate people we know, which could be problematic, say, in a classroom. "For example, a professor who considers his student to be highly intelligent will probably tend to overestimate that student's performance in an oral exam," he says. "As long as all students are treated that way, it will be OK. But the more likely case is that the professor will not have identical images of all of his students and judge them accordingly." Conducting anonymous assessments is preferable when possible, as well as ensuring that performances are assessed by people who have no prior acquaintance with those they are judging. While the new study asked participants to make their judgments using everyday terms and language, Leising would like to see future such studies examine more factual qualities of behavior - for example, in eyewitness testimony, asking which person was the first to physically attack the other person. He also would like to see future work explore more negative attributes. But recruiting people who know but do not like each other is a research challenge. "We're still working on ways to overcome that difficulty," Leising say. "Including critical informants in future studies is important, because the social world we inhabit often comprises not only friends, but also foes. In my view, that aspect is yet insufficiently represented in present-day personality research."

'affective' Touch may be the Secret to a Healthy Sense of Self

'affective' Touch may be the Secret to a Healthy Sense of SelfA loving touch, characterized by a slow caress or stroke - often an instinctive gesture from a mother to a child or between partners in romantic relationships - may increase the brain's ability to construct a sense of body ownership and, in turn, play a part in creating and sustaining a healthy sense of self. These findings come from a new study published online in Frontiers of Psychology, led by Neuropsychoanalysis Centre Director Dr. Aikaterini (Katerina) Fotopoulou, University College London, and NPSA grantee Dr. Paul Mark Jenkinson of the Department of Psychology, University of Hertfordshire in the UK.The study, of 52 healthy adults, used a common experimental technique known as the rubber hand illusion, in which participants' brains are tricked into believing that a strategically placed rubber hand is their own. As they watch the rubber hand being stroked in synchrony with their own, they begin to think that the fake hand belongs to them. This technique demonstrates the changeable nature of the brain's perception of the body. Affective touch, characterised by slow speed tactile stimulation of the skin (between 1 and 10cm per second) has been previously correlated with pleasant emotion and has also been seen to improve symptoms of anxiety and other emotional symptoms in certain groups of adults and infants. Dr. Fotopoulou's team wanted to test whether affective touch would affect the brain's understanding of the body and body ownership. The team adapted the 'rubber hand' technique to incorporate four different types of touch, including a synchronized and asynchronized, slow, affective touch and a faster neutral touch, again in synchronous and asynchronous patterns. Participants were also asked to complete a standardized 'embodiment' questionnaire, to measure their subjective experience during the experiment. The results confirmed previous findings that slow, light touch is perceived as being more pleasant than fast touch. More importantly, the study demonstrated that slow tactile stimulation made participants more likely to believe that the rubber hand was their own, compared with the faster neutral touch. The perception of affective touch in the brain is one of a number of interoceptive signals that help us monitor homeostasis. This study provides new evidence to support the existing idea that interoceptive signals, such as affective touch, play an important role in how the brain learns to construct a mental picture and an understanding of the body, which ultimately helps to create a coherent sense of self. Decreased sensitivity to and awareness of interoceptive signals, such as affective touch, have been linked to body image problems, unexplained pain, anorexia nervosa and bulimia. "As affective touch is typically received from a loved one, these findings further highlight how close relationships involve behaviors that may play a crucial role in the construction of a sense of self," said Laura Crucianelli, the researcher who carried out the study. "The next step for our team," concluded Dr. Katerina Fotopoulou, "is to examine whether being deprived of social signals, such as affective touch from a parent during early development, may also lead to abnormalities in the formation of a healthy body image and a healthy sense of self, for example in patients with eating disorders such as anorexia nervosa." Boosting interoceptive awareness and an individual's sense of body ownership could be key to developing future treatments for some of these conditions, and the sensation of 'affective touch' could play an important role.

Sikkim reports highest number percent of diabetes, hypertension as per NPCDCS screening

Belying the common notion that South Indian States reported maximum number of diabetes cases, Sikkim emerged as the State to have maximum percentage of suspected diabetic patients, if the ongoing screening for diabetes and hypertension by the Union government is any indication.According to the figures based on the screening so far done under the National Programme for Prevention and Control of Cancer, Diabetes, Cardiovascular Diseases and Stroke (NPCDCS), screening for diabetes & hypertension among the population above 30 years of age has been initiated in 100 districts of 21 States. 3,81,12,537 persons have been screened for diabetes and 20,14,385 persons have been screened for hypertension till the end of August. The screening found that 6.32 per cent of the population having suspected of diabetes and 5.91 per cent as suspected of hypertension. Standing high above the national average, 13.67 per cent people among those screened had diabetes while 18.16 per cent of them have hypertension. Out of total 127,393 people screened, 17414 persons have suspected cases of diabetes while 32,225 have hypertension.Karnataka (9.36 per cent), Punjab (9.36 per cent), Gujarat (9.10 per cent) and Andhra Pradesh (7.42 per cent) reported high incidence after Sikkim in the case of diabetes. Madhya Pradesh with just 2.57 per cent reported the least number of cases. In the case of hypertension, Assam came second with 10.42 per cent of prevalence, after Sikkim.According to report published by International Diabetes Federation (IDF; 5th Edition, 2011), number of people with diabetes (20-79 years) in Urban setting of India are about 27 millions in 2011 which is projected to reach about 56 millions in 2030.The Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) has completed the phase I of Task Force project entitled, “ICMR-India Diabetes (INDIAB) Study-Phase-I,” with the aim to determine the national prevalence of type 2 diabetes mellitus and pre-diabetes in India, by estimating the state-wise prevalence of the same and  compare the prevalence of type-2 diabetes and pre-diabetes in urban and rural areas across India. In the first phase of the study, the rural and urban settings in four states and one union territory viz., Tamil Nadu, Jharkhand, Maharashtra and Chandigarh have been included. The adjusted prevalence of diabetes (both known and newly diagnosed) in Tamil Nadu was 10.4 per cent, Jharkhand - 5.3 per cent, Chandigarh - 13.6 per cent and Maharashtra - 8.4 per cent. The prevalence of pre-diabetes was 8.3 per cent, 8.1 per cent, 14.6 per cent and 12.8 per cent respectively.Data reported during the course of screening of school children under NPCDCS indicates that out of 92,047 school children screened in the towns of Nainital, Ratlam and Bhilwara, 1,351(1.467 per cent) were suspected to be diabetic.

Herpes Virus may Lead to Cancer!

herpes cold soreMost of us don't know it, but we are infected by the herpes virus aka Epstein-Barr virus (EBV). For most of us, the virus will lead at worst to a case of infectious mononucleosis, but sometimes, and especially in some parts of the world, those viruses are found in association with cancer. Now, researchers reporting in the Cell Press journal Cell Reports on October 10 have found that the difference between a relatively harmless infection and a cancer-causing one lies at least partly in the viral strain itself. The results offer some of the first evidence for the existence of distinct EBV subtypes with very different public health risks. The researchers say that vaccination or other strategies for preventing EBV infection will need to be designed with these most pathogenic, cancer-causing strains in mind. "EBV is an important but neglected pathogen," said Henri-Jacques Delecluse of the German Cancer Research Centre in Heidelberg, Germany. "We have made an important step in recognizing that EBV is actually a family of viruses that have different properties, some of which are very likely to cause disease. So, the consequences of being infected with EBV might be different, depending on the strain one carries." Delecluse and his colleagues made the discovery by sequencing the DNA of a viral strain dubbed M81 isolated from a Chinese patient with nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC). Their analyses revealed that M81 is highly similar to other viruses isolated from NPCs and profoundly different from Western strains in terms of its ability to infect and replicate within cells. The M81 strain can infect epithelial cells and multiply spontaneously at a very high level in all cells it infects, including B lymphocytes, the cells in which the viruses hide, the researchers report. It remains to be seen exactly how infected epithelial cells become cancerous. "Our results have made me radically change my strategy to address the problem of EBV-associated diseases," Delecluse said. "The current view is that the virus is essentially the same all over the world and that local conditions explain the different consequences of EBV infection. We now show that the type of EBV also plays an important role. By concentrating on the potentially pathogenic EBV strains, we will soon better understand how EBV causes diseases, and this will also help [in] designing prevention strategies."

Pomegranates Help Burn Fat: Study

Pomegranates Help Burn Fat: StudyA recent study has found that pomegranates can help burn fat and increase the blood flow.According to the study, which was conducted at Barcelona's Catalan Institute for Cardiovascular Sciences, the "superfruit" contains antioxidants, called polyphenols, that keep arteries free of fat, the Daily Express reported. Polyphenols also help arteries expand and contract to maintain blood flow and keep them from hardening, which is the leading cause of heart attacks.

Physical Activity Is Key to Healthy Aging: Clinical Review

A clinical review from geriatricians at the University of Alabama at Birmingham suggests physical activity is important for healthy aging and urges primary care physicians to take a more aggressive role in ascertaining the mobility of their older patients. The study was published Sept. 18, 2013, in the Journal of the American Medical Association, as part of their continuing series, Care of an Aging Patient. The authors, Cynthia J. Brown, M.D., MSPH, and Kellie Flood, M.D., of the UAB Division of Gerontology, Geriatrics and Palliative Care, conducted a clinical review of academic papers published between 1985 and 2012 dealing with mobility issues in a general aging population. "The review confirmed that increased physical activity and exercise are extremely important for healthy aging," said Brown. "We've also identified mobility-limiting risk factors and created an approach to help medical professionals screen for and treat those risk factors." Brown said mobility limitations are often an early sign of impending functional decline in seniors. Recognizing an increase in those limitations at an early stage creates the opportunity for successful interventions aimed at warding off functional decline and keeping seniors living independently for as long as possible. "Mobility limitations are the edge of that slippery slope that leads to loss of function," said Brown. "A decline in mobility seems to quickly lead to an across-the-board decline, including the routine activities of daily living. Mobility is a sort of barometer for how well an older person ages." The approach that Brown and Flood recommend suggests that primary care physicians should ask all senior patients two questions: for health or physical reasons, do you have difficulty climbing up 10 steps or walking a quarter of a mile; and because of underlying health or physical reasons, have you modified the way you climb 10 steps or walk a quarter of a mile? "Any modification of a task such as climbing 10 steps raises a red flag," said Brown. "Asking the right questions can tell a clinician a great deal about the level of mobility in their older patients." Brown said that a positive answer to either of the two questions should lead the primary care provider to dig deeper and identify the physical, social or environmental components leading to the limitations, and they should take steps to address those limitations through physical therapy services and/or prescribing appropriate ambulatory devices. She also said primary care physicians are the front line of defense against other identified risk factors like obesity and smoking. Brown, a physical therapist for 10 years before becoming a physician, suggests greater interaction between doctors and therapists. "Mobility is one of the cornerstones of healthy aging," she said. "With an increasing older population in the United States, it is incumbent on us to find ways to help older Americans continue to live well and independently. The major barriers - lack of physical activity, obesity and smoking - are all risk factors that can be successfully overcome with appropriate treatment and assistance.

BUSM identifies barriers to implementing complimentary medicine curricula into residency

Investigators at Boston University School of Medicine (BUSM) have identified that lack of time and a paucity of trained faculty are perceived as the most significant barriers to incorporating complementary and alternative medicine (CAM) and integrative medicine (IM) training into family medicine residency curricula and training programs.
The study results, which are published online in Explore: The Journal of Science and Healing, were collected using data from an online survey completed by 212 national residency program directors. The study was led by Paula Gardiner, MD, MPH, assistant professor of family medicine at BUSM and assistant director of integrative medicine at Boston Medical Center, and colleagues from the department of Family Medicine.
"This is a part of medicine that has significant impact on patient care," said Gardiner. "We need to minimize barriers to implementing CAM/IM curricula in order to address these competencies and promote a larger focus on patient centered care."
According to the current study a majority of family medicine residency program directors felt that CAM and IM were an important part of resident training and, of those, a majority was aware of these recommended competencies. However, a majority of directors also did not have specific learning goals around CAM and IM in their residency programs. Of those directors aware of the competencies, a minority had an adequate evaluation of CAM or IM in their program.
The survey respondents identified "strong" CAM/IM programs as those that incorporated at least one of the following modes of exposing residents to CAM or IM: didactics, clinical rotations or electives. "Weak" programs incorporated none of these modalities. Didactics were the most commonly employed techniques of the strong programs. There were significant differences between the strong and weak programs in perceived access to experts in CAM or IM and faculty training in these modalities.
The study was conducted via an online survey and consisted of six questions on CAM and IM with a focus on awareness, competencies, attitudes toward curricula, barriers to implementation and management techniques.
Given the use of CAM and IM modalities by patients and practicing physicians future directions should include raising awareness around the proposed competencies and identifying solutions to minimize the barriers to incorporating these competencies in residency training programs.

Nobel Prize Winners for Medicine and Physiology 2013 Announced

This year's Nobel Prize for Medicine and Physiology is being awarded to Drs. James E. Rothman from Yale University, Randy W. Schekman from the University of California and Thomas C. Südhof from Stanford University, reveals a press release by the Karolinska Institute in Stockholm. The work done by these scientists helped to understand how molecules produced by certain cells are released and transported to other cells.Cells produce certain substances packed in small bubbles called vesicles. For example, the pancreatic cells produce insulin packed in vesicles that is released into the blood. Nerve cells produce neurotransmitters in similar vesicles. These vesicles have to be transported to other specific cells where they can release these molecules so that they can bring about their action. The honored scientists were responsible for decoding the mechanism of transport and release of substances from the vesicles. Dr Randy Schekman studied the vesicle transport in yeast and discovered three classes of genesresponsible in controlling the transport of vesicles to different compartments within the cell and to the cell surface. Once the vesicle reaches its target cell, there are certain proteins which enable it to dock on this cell and fuse with the cell membrane of the target cell. Dr James Rothman discovered the protein complex that brings about this docking and fusion at specific sites during his studies on mammalian cells. Dr Thomas Südhof studied the transmission of signals among nerve cells via neurotransmitters and identified proteins that bring about vesicle fusion mediated by calcium ions. His work enabled us to understand how the neurotransmitters are released from vesicles when directed to and at the right time. Defects in the vesicle transport are responsible for a number of disease conditions including diabetes. The mechanisms as explained by these scientists will help in further research of such disease conditions.

Study Shows How Body Odour Could Affect Social Judgments About Women

The smell of stress sweat alters how women are perceived by both males and females, reveals new study. The research, by P and G Beauty, the makers of SecretTM deodorants, and lead investigator Pamela Dalton, PhD. MPH, member of the Monell Chemical Senses Center, indicate that the odour from stress-related sweat specifically impacts social judgments of one's confidence, trustworthiness and competence. The ability of human body odour to communicate information between individuals is supported by an ever-expanding body of research. Not only have body odor signals been shown to convey messages about genetic connection, dating and general health, but body odours produced from individuals in specific emotional states have been shown to affect both the neural and behavioral states of the receiver, whether or not they are consciously aware of the source of the body odour. "Stress-induced sweat, the worst smelling of the three causes of sweat, can occur unexpectedly at any point in the day, often becoming a vicious cycle," Dr. Susan Biehle-Hulette, Procter and Gamble and Secret brand senior scientist for product development, said. "Research demonstrates there are three causes of sweat: physical exertion, environmental heat and stress. "Sweat caused by physical activity (internal thermal stress) and environmental heat (external thermal stress) are produced by secretions from the eccrine sweat gland, while stress (emotional) sweat is produced by secretions from the eccrine and apocrine gland, and as this sweat mixes with bacteria on our skin, the result is a distinguishably foul odour," she said. The study is published in the journal PLOS ONE.

Role of Female Sex Hormones on Mood Explained By Pre-menstrual Dysphoric Disorder: Study

It is important to have an improved understanding of the role of female sex hormones on the drivers and symptoms of premenstrual dysphoric disorder (PMDD). This may help shed light on the complex interactions between sex hormones and mood, potentially helping to explain the increased prevalence of mood disorders in women.
Role of Female Sex Hormones on Mood Explained By Pre-menstrual Dysphoric Disorder: Study Most women are unaffected by the hormonal changes of the menstrual cycle, however approximately 20% of women experience premenstrual syndrome (PMS), or premenstrual dysphoric disorder (PMDD), a more severe form of PMS. The latter affects roughly 5% of women of reproductive age, and is categorised as a mood disorder characterised by functionally impairing or distressing mood, and physical symptoms in the luteal phase of the menstrual cycle (second half of cycle). Symptoms typically improve after menstruation has begun, and there is an absence of symptoms in the post-menstrual week. Hallmark mood symptoms include mood fluctuations, irritability, anxiety, tension, and depression.

PMDD is moderately heritable, however to date, no genetic marker has consistently been associated with the disorder, nor have abnormalities in levels of sex hormones been found.
Professor Inger Sundström Poromaa, Professor of Obstetrics and Gynaecology at the Department of Women's and Children's Health, Uppsala University, Sweden presented findings from neuroimaging studies in patients with PMDD at the 26th ECNP Congress. The results suggested that brain activity across the menstrual cycle is different between healthy controls and women with PMDD, highlighting the importance of hormone fluctuations in this disorder.
Fifteen women with PMDD underwent neuroimaging using functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) in the late follicular and late luteal phases of their menstrual cycle. Women completed an emotional processing task related to anxiety control. A total of 14 controls received the same battery of neuroimaging tests and results were compared between the two groups.
Specifically, results showed that when women with PMDD were exposed to emotional processing, they showed higher activation of the amygdala region of the brain in the follicular phase, relating to impaired anxiety control compared to healthy controls.

The increased amygdala activation in response to emotional stimuli in the follicular phase was highly correlated with the very low, follicular phase, progesterone concentrations. "Our interpretation is that PMDD women are indeed hyper-responsive to even low progesterone levels, and that the amygdala successively habituates to the increasing luteal phase progesterone levels."However, in some patients with PMDD, enhanced emotional responses, due to amygdala activation, were also seen in the luteal phase. "In addition, patients with PMDD who also have high scores of anxiety, display increased emotion-induced amygdala reactivity in the luteal phase too."
In addition, Professor Sundström Poromaa also found that amygdala reactivity in PMDD is differently influenced by the content of the emotional stimuli. Women with PMDD displayed increased amygdala reactivity to social stimuli as compared to non-social stimuli in the luteal phase.
Effectively, these results suggest that although PMDD women clinically only have anxiety in the luteal phase, the anxiety mechanisms may be different in the early and late luteal phase. "Clearly they have an amygdala that is easily activated once progesterone levels start to increase in the early luteal phase. The higher amygdala activity in the follicular phase may also be a more general vulnerability mark in PMDD women," explained Professor Sundström Poromaa.
Furthermore, the researchers found that women with PMDD who were carriers of the BDNF Val66Met risk genetic mutation had lower activation of the fronto-cingulate cortex region in the luteal phase, suggesting difficulty with control of anxiety by the brain.
Professor Sundström Poromaa explained why their research was particularly important for many women during reproductive years. She noted that anxiety and depression disorders were twice as common in women, and major depressive disorder was the leading cause of disease burden in 15 to 44-year-old women. "The sex bias for depressive disorders is not evident until after puberty, and this suggests a possible role for sex hormones in the manifestation of increased risk for these disorders in women."
"PMDD is an important disorder in this context as it may be used to disentangle the complex interactions between sex hormones and mood, ultimately helping us to understand the female preponderance for mood disorders," she added.
The research conducted by the Uppsala group may also have implications for women with anxiety and depressive disorders who require oral contraception.
"To date, very little emphasis has been put into evaluating the best possible hormonal contraception, with no or positive impact on mood, in women suffering from anxiety and mood disorders. Ongoing clinical trials with low-dose estrogen oral contraceptives will shed light on their usefulness in women with mood disorders."
Finally, while women with PMDD may benefit from serotonin antidepressant treatment, many women discontinue treatment or request treatments that better target the hormonal causes of the disorder. The research of Professor Sundström Poromaa and her team may aid in developing new treatment strategies for affected women.

Scientist Proves DNA Can Be Reprogrammed by Words and Frequencies

THE HUMAN DNA IS A BIOLOGICAL INTERNET and superior in many aspects to the artificial one. Russian scientific research directly or indirectly explains phenomena such as clairvoyance, intuition, spontaneous and remote acts of healing, self healing, affirmation techniques, unusual light/auras around people (namely spiritual masters), mind’s influence on weather patterns and much more. In addition, there is evidence for a whole new type of medicine in which DNA can be influenced and reprogrammed by words and frequencies WITHOUT cutting out and replacing single genes.
Only 10% of our DNA is being used for building proteins. It is this subset of DNA that is of interest to western researchers and is being examined and categorized. The other 90% are considered “junk DNA.” The Russian researchers, however, convinced that nature was not dumb, joined linguists and geneticists in a venture to explore those 90% of “junk DNA.” Their results, findings and conclusions are simply revolutionary! According to them, our DNA is not only responsible for the construction of our body but also serves as data storage and in communication. The Russian linguists found that the genetic code, especially in the apparently useless 90%, follows the same rules as all our human languages. To this end they compared the rules of syntax (the way in which words are put together to form phrases and sentences), semantics (the study of meaning in language forms) and the basic rules of grammar. They found that the alkalines of our DNA follow a regular grammar and do have set rules just like our languages. So human languages did not appear coincidentally but are a reflection of our inherent DNA.
The Russian biophysicist and molecular biologist Pjotr Garjajev and his colleagues also explored the vibrational behavior of the DNA. [For the sake of brevity I will give only a summary here. For further exploration please refer to the appendix at the end of this article.] The bottom line was: “Living chromosomes function just like solitonic/holographic computers using the endogenous DNA laser radiation.” This means that they managed for example to modulate certain frequency patterns onto a laser ray and with it influenced the DNA frequency and thus the genetic information itself. Since the basic structure of DNA-alkaline pairs and of language (as explained earlier) are of the same structure, no DNA decoding is necessary.
One can simply use words and sentences of the human language! This, too, was experimentally proven! Living DNA substance (in living tissue, not in vitro) will always react to language-modulated laser rays and even to radio waves, if the proper frequencies are being used.
This finally and scientifically explains why affirmations, autogenous training, hypnosis and the like can have such strong effects on humans and their bodies. It is entirely normal and natural for our DNA to react to language. While western researchers cut single genes from the DNA strands and insert them elsewhere, the Russians enthusiastically worked on devices that can influence the cellular metabolism through suitable modulated radio and light frequencies and thus repair genetic defects.
Garjajev’s research group succeeded in proving that with this method chromosomes damaged by x-rays for example can be repaired. They even captured information patterns of a particular DNA and transmitted it onto another, thus reprogramming cells to another genome. ?So they successfully transformed, for example, frog embryos to salamander embryos simply by transmitting the DNA information patterns! This way the entire information was transmitted without any of the side effects or disharmonies encountered when cutting out and re-introducing single genes from the DNA. This represents an unbelievable, world-transforming revolution and sensation! All this by simply applying vibration and language instead of the archaic cutting-out procedure! This experiment points to the immense power of wave genetics, which obviously has a greater influence on the formation of organisms than the biochemical processes of alkaline sequences.
Esoteric and spiritual teachers have known for ages that our body is programmable by language, words and thought. This has now been scientifically proven and explainedOf course the frequency has to be correct. And this is why not everybody is equally successful or can do it with always the same strength. The individual person must work on the inner processes and maturity in order to establish a conscious communication with the DNA. The Russian researchers work on a method that is not dependent on these factors but will ALWAYS work, provided one uses the correct frequency.
But the higher developed an individual’s consciousness is, the less need is there for any type of device! One can achieve these results by oneself, and science will finally stop to laugh at such ideas and will confirm and explain the results. And it doesn’t end there.?The Russian scientists also found out that our DNA can cause disturbing patterns in the vacuum, thus producing magnetized wormholes! Wormholes are the microscopic equivalents of the so-called Einstein-Rosen bridges in the vicinity of black holes (left by burned-out stars).? These are tunnel connections between entirely different areas in the universe through which information can be transmitted outside of space and time. The DNA attracts these bits of information and passes them on to our consciousness. This process of hyper communication is most effective in a state of relaxation. Stress, worries or a hyperactive intellect prevent successful hyper communication or the information will be totally distorted and useless.
In nature, hyper communication has been successfully applied for millions of years. The organized flow of life in insect states proves this dramatically. Modern man knows it only on a much more subtle level as “intuition.” But we, too, can regain full use of it. An example from Nature: When a queen ant is spatially separated from her colony, building still continues fervently and according to plan. If the queen is killed, however, all work in the colony stops. No ant knows what to do. Apparently the queen sends the “building plans” also from far away via the group consciousness of her subjects. She can be as far away as she wants, as long as she is alive. In man hyper communication is most often encountered when one suddenly gains access to information that is outside one’s knowledge base. Such hyper communication is then experienced as inspiration or intuition. The Italian composer Giuseppe Tartini for instance dreamt one night that a devil sat at his bedside playing the violin. The next morning Tartini was able to note down the piece exactly from memory, he called it the Devil’s Trill Sonata.
For years, a 42-year old male nurse dreamt of a situation in which he was hooked up to a kind of knowledge CD-ROM. Verifiable knowledge from all imaginable fields was then transmitted to him that he was able to recall in the morning. There was such a flood of information that it seemed a whole encyclopedia was transmitted at night. The majority of facts were outside his personal knowledge base and reached technical details about which he knew absolutely nothing.
When hyper communication occurs, one can observe in the DNA as well as in the human being special phenomena. The Russian scientists irradiated DNA samples with laser light. On screen a typical wave pattern was formed. When they removed the DNA sample, the wave pattern did not disappear, it remained. Many control experiments showed that the pattern still came from the removed sample, whose energy field apparently remained by itself. This effect is now called phantom DNA effect. It is surmised that energy from outside of space and time still flows through the activated wormholes after the DNA was removed. The side effect encountered most often in hyper communication also in human beings are inexplicable electromagnetic fields in the vicinity of the persons concerned. Electronic devices like CD players and the like can be irritated and cease to function for hours. When the electromagnetic field slowly dissipates, the devices function normally again. Many healers and psychics know this effect from their work. The better the atmosphere and the energy, the more frustrating it is that the recording device stops functioning and recording exactly at that moment. And repeated switching on and off after the session does not restore function yet, but next morning all is back to normal. Perhaps this is reassuring to read for many, as it has nothing to do with them being technically inept, it means they are good at hyper communication.
In their book “Vernetzte Intelligenz” (Networked Intelligence), Grazyna Gosar and Franz Bludorf explain these connections precisely and clearly. The authors also quote sources presuming that in earlier times humanity had been, just like the animals, very strongly connected to the group consciousness and acted as a group. To develop and experience individuality we humans however had to forget hyper communication almost completely. Now that we are fairly stable in our individual consciousness, we can create a new form of group consciousness, namely one, in which we attain access to all information via our DNA without being forced or remotely controlled about what to do with that information. We now know that just as on the internet our DNA can feed its proper data into the network, can call up data from the network and can establish contact with other participants in the network. Remote healing, telepathy or “remote sensing” about the state of relatives etc.. can thus be explained. Some animals know also from afar when their owners plan to return home. That can be freshly interpreted and explained via the concepts of group consciousness and hyper communication. Any collective consciousness cannot be sensibly used over any period of time without a distinctive individuality. Otherwise we would revert to a primitive herd instinct that is easily manipulated.
Hyper communication in the new millennium means something quite different: Researchers think that if humans with full individuality would regain group consciousness, they would have a god-like power to create, alter and shape things on Earth! AND humanity is collectively moving toward such a group consciousness of the new kind. Fifty percent of today’s children will be problem children as soon as the go to school. The system lumps everyone together and demands adjustment. But the individuality of today’s children is so strong that that they refuse this adjustment and giving up their idiosyncrasies in the most diverse ways.
At the same time more and more clairvoyant children are born [see the book “China’s Indigo Children”by Paul Dong or the chapter about Indigos in my book “Nutze die taeglichen Wunder”(Make Use of the Daily Wonders)]. Something in those children is striving more and more towards the group consciousness of the new kind, and it will no longer be suppressed. As a rule, weather for example is rather difficult to influence by a single individual. But it may be influenced by a group consciousness (nothing new to some tribes doing it in their rain dances). Weather is strongly influenced by Earth resonance frequencies, the so-called Schumann frequencies. But those same frequencies are also produced in our brains, and when many people synchronize their thinking or individuals (spiritual masters, for instance) focus their thoughts in a laser-like fashion, then it is scientifically speaking not at all surprising if they can thus influence weather.
Researchers in group consciousness have formulated the theory of Type I civilizations. A humanity that developed a group consciousness of the new kind would have neither environmental problems nor scarcity of energy. For if it were to use its mental power as a unified civilization, it would have control of the energies of its home planet as a natural consequence. And that includes all natural catastrophes!!! A theoretical Type II civilization would even be able to control all energies of their home galaxy. In my book “Nutze die taeglichen Wunder,” I have described an example of this: Whenever a great many people focus their attention or consciousness on something similar like Christmas time, football world championship or the funeral of Lady Diana in England then certain random number generators in computers start to deliver ordered numbers instead of the random ones. An ordered group consciousness creates order in its whole surroundings!
When a great number of people get together very closely, potentials of violence also dissolve. It looks as if here, too, a kind of humanitarian consciousness of all humanity is created.(The Global Consciousness Project)
To come back to the DNA: It apparently is also an organic superconductor that can work at normal body temperature. Artificial superconductors require extremely low temperatures of between 200 and 140°C to function. As one recently learned, all superconductors are able to store light and thus information. This is a further explanation of how the DNA can store information. There is another phenomenon linked to DNA and wormholes. Normally, these supersmall wormholes are highly unstable and are maintained only for the tiniest fractions of a second. Under certain conditions stable wormholes can organize themselves which then form distinctive vacuum domains in which for example gravity can transform into electricity.
Vacuum domains are self-radiant balls of ionized gas that contain considerable amounts of energy. There are regions in Russia where such radiant balls appear very often. Following the ensuing confusion the Russians started massive research programs leading finally to some of the discoveries mentions above. Many people know vacuum domains as shiny balls in the sky. The attentive look at them in wonder and ask themselves, what they could be. I thought once: “Hello up there. If you happen to be a UFO, fly in a triangle.” And suddenly, the light balls moved in a triangle. Or they shot across the sky like ice hockey pucks. They accelerated from zero to crazy speeds while sliding gently across the sky. One is left gawking and I have, as many others, too, thought them to be UFOs. Friendly ones, apparently, as they flew in triangles just to please me. Now the Russians found in the regions, where vacuum domains appear often that sometimes fly as balls of light from the ground upwards into the sky, that these balls can be guided by thought. One has found out since that vacuum domains emit waves of low frequency as they are also produced in our brains.
And because of this similarity of waves they are able to react to our thoughts. To run excitedly into one that is on ground level might not be such a great idea, because those balls of light can contain immense energies and are able to mutate our genes. They can, they don’t necessarily have to, one has to say. For many spiritual teachers also produce such visible balls or columns of light in deep meditation or during energy work which trigger decidedly pleasant feelings and do not cause any harm. Apparently this is also dependent on some inner order and on the quality and provenance of the vacuum domain. There are some spiritual teachers (the young Englishman Ananda, for example) with whom nothing is seen at first, but when one tries to take a photograph while they sit and speak or meditate in hyper communication, one gets only a picture of a white cloud on a chair. In some Earth healing projects such light effects also appear on photographs. Simply put, these phenomena have to do with gravity and anti-gravity forces that are also exactly described in the book and with ever more stable wormholes and hyper communication and thus with energies from outside our time and space structure.
Earlier generations that got in contact with such hyper communication experiences and visible vacuum domains were convinced that an angel had appeared before them. And we cannot be too sure to what forms of consciousness we can get access when using hyper communication. Not having scientific proof for their actual existence (people having had such experiences do NOT all suffer from hallucinations) does not mean that there is no metaphysical background to it. We have simply made another giant step towards understanding our reality.
Official science also knows of gravity anomalies on Earth (that contribute to the formation of vacuum domains), but only of ones of below one percent. But recently gravity anomalies have been found of between three and four percent. One of these places is Rocca di Papa, south of Rome (exact location in the book “Vernetzte Intelligenz” plus several others). Round objects of all kinds, from balls to full buses, roll uphill. But the stretch in Rocca di Papa is rather short, and defying logic sceptics still flee to the theory of optical illusion (which it cannot be due to several features of the location).
So human languages did not appear coincidentally but are a reflection of our inherent DNA.

This has now been scientifically proven and explained. Of course the frequency has to be correct.
