A study recently published in a reputable medical journal states that the leading cause of death throughout the world is stroke. In fact, 85 percent of deaths worldwide are due to stroke. Most people understand what a stroke is, and many people have had a friend or family member who has suffered a stroke.A stroke consists of loss of function of one side of the body and sometimes a loss in vision, intellect or speech.Stroke is the second leading cause of death globally. It accounts for 85 percent of deaths in developing countries, classified as either low-income or middle-income countries. The leading cause of stroke in these countries and in the United States is high blood pressure, smoking, abdominal obesity, diets high in salt, lack of physical activity, cardiac causes, depression, diabetes and alcohol. Many organizations around the world and in the United States are trying to change the outcome of the devastation caused by stroke. Oftentimes, these attempted changes have been successful, but there still is much that needs to be done.
