Dr Mahantesh Ramannavar, Anatomy professor at BM Kankanwadi Ayurveda Mahavidyalaya of KLE University here, dissected the body of his father on Saturday.
Dr Mahantesh, accompanied by his students, entered the dissection room and worked on the body of Dr Basavanneppa at 4.20 pm. Dr Basavanneppa had specified in his will that his body be donated to the institute, where his son would be working, so the latter can dissect the same.
Saturday was Dr Basavanneppa's second death anniversary. He was a well-known freedom fighter, dentist and Ayurvedic doctor in Bailhongal of Belgaum district.
There was a huge rush of mediapersons at the dissection room. Several TV channels covered the event on live. This is said to be the first case in the medical history wherein a son worked on his father's body. Earlier, Dr William Harvey ( London) had dissected his sister's body.
University chancellor Prabhakar Kore, principal Dr B S Prasad, head of Anatomy department Dr R V Pakkannavar, staff members and students witnessed the rare incident. Dr Mahantesh's mother Sushiladevi, brothers Gangadhar, Jagadish and their spouses, sisters Mahadevi, Vijaylaxmi and Shobha were also present.
Kore said the incident sends out a message on donating cadavers while Dr Mahantesh highlighted the need for motivating people for that. The university felicitated him and his mother on the occasion.
