Time to re-establish Ayurveda: President

President Pratibha Devi Singh Patil on Thursday said it is important to re-establish Ayurveda as an alternative medicine therapy.
She also expressed concern over the fact that medicinal herbs are endangered due to climate change. She said something should be done for its prevention.
“Government and other concerned agencies must concentrate on imparting Ayurvedic education and training to would-be Ayurveda physicians,” said Patil while formally inaugurating the newly constructed Chaudhary Brahm Prakash Ayurvedic Sansthan at Khera Dabar near Najafgarh in south west Delhi.
Patil appreciated the efforts of Delhi government for setting up a large Ayurvedic Hospital, Ayurvedic college and sprawling herbal garden along with an advanced research centre.
She expressed hope that the institute will become one of the leading Ayurvedic Centres of health care.
She added that there is a need to spread awareness about the effectiveness and capacity of Ayurvedic medicines to overcome diseases.
“The manufactures of Ayurvedic medicines should strictly follow standards of certification, purity, quality and pharmacology,” said Patil while advocating that there is a need to patent rights for Ayurvedic medicines.
Chief minister Sheila Dikshit said the city government will concentrate on research in the institute in order to popularise the Ayurvedic system of medicine.
“In the herbal garden, spread over an area of 70 acres, around 13,500 medicinal saplings have been planted to make it a world-class garden,” added Dikshit.
She said a new landmark has been created in the national capital with the commissioning of the institute.
