Within the next 40 years an extra 1.5 trillion litres of water will be needed to cope with a population in Australia of up to 45 million.
A new study says future cities will have to be re-plumbed and waterless washing machines are likely to be encouraged; water restrictions will be commonplace and as environment reporter Sarah Clarke explains, water will cost more.
Australia is the driest inhabited continent on earth and against a backdrop of climate change and with population predicted to grow to up to 45 million people by 2056, water supplies are only going to get worse.
Ross Young is from the Water Services Association's Ross young said the volumes of water required for urban Australia going forward to 2050 are quite significant compared to today's water consumption levels. However, the urban water industry believes that, you know, we have the technology and the resources to make sure that water won't be a limiting factor for population growth in urban Australia.
A new report by Australia's major water utilities, which estimates demand for water will increase by almost 1 trillion litres by 2056 based on a population of 31 million people, and the worst case scenario indicates more than 1.5 trillion litres may be needed if Australia reaches 45 million.
