Homeo cure for prostate gets global signal

People suffering from enlarged prostatecan now take heart. A recent study conducted by homeopathy practitioner and city-based doctor Girish Gupta shows that homeopathy can cure benign cases of enlarged prostate glands, a medical condition that was only believed to be curable through surgery. Gupta's research paper, titled `Evidence based clinical study to assess the usefulness of homeopathic medicines in patients of benign prostatic hyperplasia', has also been peer-reviewed and published in the Indian Journal of Research in Homeopathy in December 2010. "This project was commissioned to us by the Central Council of Research in Homeopathy (CCRH). After seeing the work my clinic had done in this area in the past, the department of Ayush at the Union ministry of health and family welfare gave us funds worth Rs 12.84 lakh to conduct a clinical study on the subject, Gupta, a practitioner of homeopathic medicine for over 20 years, said.
Conducted by a 9-member panel comprising Gupta as principal investigator and JP Singh, additional director CCRH as investigator, the collaborative research study claims to be the first-of-its-kind in the area. Gupta said: "Enlarged prostate glands affect the aged. It takes a toll on their ability to pass urine with ease. Allopathy offers surgery as a solution to this condition but is risky because many patients suffer from diabetes or hyper tension. In addition, medication, though helpful, must be had life long. Though homeopathy offered a permanent cure to the medical condition, no clinical documented study existed in the area. After researching the subject and treating nearly 100 patients at his clinic, Gupta, in 1993 presented a paper on homeopathy's ability to treat benign prostatic hyperplasia in Malaysia. The results were positive and generated interest among several medical practitioners. And that only encouraged Gupta to carry on his research work. "In medical science, such papers tend to have greater credibility once they are peer-reviewed and have a stamp of approval by the government. And it also reasserts the need for doctors to document the cases they treat, he said. On the basis of the existing body of work Gupta had, CCRH approached his Lucknow-based Homeopathic Research Foundation (HRF) in 2005-06 and commissioned him to do a detailed scientific research on homeopathic treatment for benign cases of enlarged prostate glands. The study was conducted between July 2006 and September 2009 and which, Gupta and his team spent two months compiling the data.
For the purpose of the research project, 121 patients were enrolled, out of which 43 completed the study according to the prescribed protocol. Trial medicines, on the basis of principles of homeopathy were prescribed and patients' reactions were assessed on four standard parameters, before and after treatment. Results of clinical tests proved to be positive. According to the paper, "results obtained from the study are encouraging with findings that 93% of patients improved clinically with an evidence of positive changes in diagnostic parameters. However, such study with randomized control trial is needed to further validate the usefulness of homeopathic medicines.
Clearly, Gupta is not resting easy. Aside from continuing his efforts in this area, he is already making headway in another area of homeopathy of treating ovarian cysts with homeopathy, without surgery. For this effort too, he has been approached by CCHR this time and the funding has been increased to Rs 20 lakh. Gupta said: "Our study was completed in February 2010. Currently, the paper is in the process of being peer reviewed. We expect it to be published in the next few months.
