The government has come to this decision since the existing Act hinders the measures to develop the Ayurvedic medicine through production of new types of medicine and popularize new methods.
The present Ayurvedic Act was brought in 1961 and it remained unchanged for almost 50 years. However, proposals were mooted since 1998 regarding the need of amending the Ayurvedic Act.
With the rapid development of the tourism industry in the island, Ayurveda has found new avenues, highlighting the need for amendments in the Act government sources say.
