Treating Allergies with Traditional Medicine: Ayurvedic Medicine During the Spring Season

Allergies occur when a person’s immune system mistakenly believes an antigen (allergen) is harmful. The dust, pollen, and even the smell of roses is attacked by the immune system. Antibodies are produced in response to these environmental allergens. This hypersensitivity reaction results in the sneezing, sniffling, and pile of tissues that surrounds some of us in the spring and fall.

In Ayurveda, allergic symptoms are rarely caused by the allergens themselves. It is how our immune system reacts to these allergens that causes an allergic response. In Ayurveda, the main factor of allergies is from improperly digested food called Ama. Ama is a toxic substance that can block the channels of circulation which are the body’s main lines of communication. These lines of communication must be cleared so that the body can respond without the hyper-vigilance and overly defensive attack to these harmless substances.Ayurveda, which literally means "The Science of Life," is the healing science from India. It has been practiced for over 5,000 years by millions of individuals to assist the body in journeying back to optimal health. Ayurveda views health and disease as the end result of how we interact with the world, in terms of our beliefs, perceptions, thoughts, and feelings, which then ultimately determine our actions. Actions in harmony with our inner nature create health, while those dis-harmonious with our inner nature create disease. Health comes when we live in harmony with our true nature as spirit.
Ayurveda recognizes that each individual is unique, and thus, an Ayurvedic treatment is uniquely tailored to the individual. Important parts of any allergy management program includes boosting the digestive fire, adjust the diet to support full digestion, detoxify, and restore the strength of the immune system. Additional, one can consider pancha karma as an important part of the treatment.
