Homeopathic cure of an obese patient

Introduction: Obesity is defined by the World Health Organization as a BMI of over 30 kg/m2. A higher waist to hip ratio, indicating central fat distribution, is commoner in males and is associated with greater health risks, which include type 2 diabetes mellitus, IHD (ischemic heart disease), dyslipidemia, increased blood pressure, osteoarthritis of weight bearing joints and cancer (breast and bowel).
Psychological aspects of these patients should be considered, because most patients suffer from various mental and psychological problems such as disappointed love, bulimia, different levels of depression, sleep disorders, nightmares, sexual abuse, severe or fastidious parents and psychopathological parents, siblings or relatives.

The majority of cases are not due to specific metabolic disorders. Lifestyle change is the key to treatment, to increase energy expenditure and reduce intake. Medication with or without surgery may be considered if the patient fulfills strict criteria.

Conditions associated with obesity include: genetic (Prader-Willi syndrome, Lawrence-Moon syndrome), hypothyroidism, Cushing’s syndrome and hypothalamic damage (eg. tumor or trauma leads to damage to satiety regions).

Analysis of the patient: A 27 yr old engineer, 1.84 m tall, suffering from obesity and overweight, weighing 140 kg, due to high calorie diet instigated by his parents during his infancy and childhood, and lack of will to stop eating. He visited the author on September 19th 2008.

He also complained of decreased self-confidence, early ejaculation, being a workaholic, chronic fatigue syndrome and leg pain while ascending stairs.

-Holistic approach based on homeopathy:

According to the holistic view of homeopathic healing in chronic conditions, a thorough case taking was done considering mental, emotional, behavioral and physical symptoms and characteristics of the patient.

He had suffered from a repeated and stressful nightmare for about 12 years, after a dispute between his parents (which resulted in their separating for 30 months). In the dream, he always found himself standing in his grandfather’s garden alone, fearful and anxious.

Then a dog rushed towards him, he got frightened deeply and tried to escape, which forced him to wake up.

The symptoms and characteristics were converted to standard rubrics and repertorized. Thus, Calc. 30 c was selected as the most similar remedy based on the patient’s condition. - Prescription: One Calc. 30 c tablet was prescribed and taken by the patient.

Course of treatment: He experienced a mild headache lasting for about ten minutes after taking the remedy. Two weeks later, on October the 3rd, the nightmare had changed to a pleasant dream; He would see himself in the same garden, without any dog rushing towards him.

This change ended the stressful dreams and sleep disturbance and lightened him mentally and physically. The author believes this is the 1st step in his overall health and improvement.

Quick ejaculation started to improve and the bad odor of his perspiration got better, as well. One month later he took calc 30 c in water. After about 2 months of repeating the remedy, he felt an internal calmness and increased energy.

At this time he felt more confident, but did not experience any weight loss. He used to have sub-axillary small and pedunculated filiform warts before taking the remedy, and these warts had enlarged. He was told to stop taking the remedy, and report back.

After about 16 months of taking the first remedy, he was seen again on (28th of Jan 2009) and his case reviewed. Based on his new symptoms, Lachesis was selected to be the 2nd prescription to cure his other symptoms, including obesity and bulimia. He weighed 140 kg, then.

Discussion: The author prescribed a tablet of Calc 30c. The awful nightmares ended and he experienced a pleasant dream in place of the nightmare. His weakness of will did not improve until prescribing a single dose of the second remedy, Lach mutus (one tea spoonful or 40 drops) about 16 months after the 1st visit.

On March 28th 2010, after 2 months, he was visited again and Phos. 30 c was prescribed as complementary remedy to Lachesis. On March 29th he reported a 10.5 kg weight loss, after 61 days. Then, he had a very unique feeling of joy, lightness and enhanced self confidence.

He weighed himself every 4- 10 days and noted it in his diary. His wife tried hard to follow the same diet, thus inspiring him to lose weight. They took advantage of different diet guidelines and books e.g. Imam Reza and healthy diet instructions.

On February 24th he succeeded in reaching the body weight of 105.8 kg. This happy patient can be called one of the biggest weight losers and was one of the most successful in reaching his optimum weight.

Conclusion: The results of this case report reveal multi- potential capabilities of the prescribed homeopathic remedies, Calcarea carbonica, Lachesis mutus and Phosphorus. The 1st one helped him get through some of his symptoms, especially the nightmare and stressful sleep. The 2nd and 3rd remedies cured him nearly totally, mentally and physically.

Once again homeopathic remedies showed their efficacy and true power of balancing a patient’s vital force and defense mechanisms and returning him to a healthy state. He accomplished a difficult task by divine classical homeopathy.
