Process of establishing Central Drug Controller’s Office for Ayush begins

The process of setting up a Central Drug Controller’s Office for Ayurveda, Siddha, Unani and Homoeopathy drugs has started in earnest with the union finance ministry making an initial fund allocation of Rs.80 lakh for the purpose.
The Central Drug Controller’s Office will be headed by Additional Drug Controller General of India (Ayush) who will exclusively monitor the Ayurveda, Siddha, Unani and Homoeopathy drugs which are gaining more popularity within and outside the country.
According to sources, department of expenditure of the union finance ministry has allocated Rs.80 lakhs in the annual plan 2012-13 for the purpose. The department of Ayush had earlier moved a proposal for setting up a Central Drug Controller’s Office for Ayurveda, Siddha, Unani and Homoeopathy to monitor the Ayurveda, Siddha, Unani and Homoeopathy drugs in the country.
Earlier, the expenditure finance committee of the finance ministry, chaired by secretary (expenditure), had approved the proposal on October 4, 2010 for creating 40 posts in the proposed Central Drug Controller’s Office (Ayush) including 25 regular and 15 contractual or outsourced posts and for supporting engagement of 330 scientific manpower in the state drug testing laboratories.
The matter for creation of required manpower is under examination in consultation with the department of expenditure and an allocation of Rs.80 lakhs is made in the annual plan 2012-13 for the purpose, sources said.
The creation of a separate Central Drug Controller’s Office for Ayurveda, Siddha, Unani and Homoeopathy is significant as the demand for traditional Indian medicines like Ayurveda, Siddha, Unani and other herbal products has increased considerably during the last some years. The world herbal market is estimated to be $62 billion out of which the share of China is $19 billion and that of India is only $1 billion. There are around 10,000 ASU drugs manufacturing units in the country at present.
