Traditional detox for techies

Tradition meets technology. Ayush - the department of Ayurveda, Yoga and Naturopathy, Unani, Siddha and Homoeopathy - is contemplating on introducing workshops for IT professionals at company campuses.
G N Sreekantaiah, director, Ayush, told media on Saturday in the sidelines of Ayur-IT, a workshop for techies, "IT professionals are responsible for generating a substantial income for the state. It's necessary to help them maintain their health. We have started dialogues with companies on conducting workshops for them."
Workshops on lifestyle, yoga, meditation and available treatments will be held on weekends in the respective company campuses. Interested corporates can approach the director. Qualified trainers from the government and private sectors will train people, he said.
A public-private partnership has been mooted, and four private companies - Shathayu, Drushti, Ayurved and Vaidaratna - have expressed interest in this project. The government will first assess the requirement and then decide the module. A nominal fee will be charged.
LIFESTYLE WOES
The lifestyle of IT professionals is taking a toll on their health. Many Ayurvedic doctors say majority of their clients are techies. "80% of our clients are from the IT industry complaining primarily of obesity and associated diseases.
The age group of clients range from 30-40 years. Diseases that used to affect people at the age of 45 years is now being found in people in their 30s," said Dr Mruthyunjaya.
Back and neck pain, fatigue, sleeplessness, infertility and obesity are some of the common problems seen among people of this profession.
S D Shibhulal, board member of Infosys Technologies, said the company is providing "excellent health care, swimming pool, cycling facilities, gym" and other facilities on campus for its employees. Besides, there is also a lot of work flexibility too, he said.
However, the director of Ayush pointed out that it is not physical stress, but mental stress, that creates health problems.
