Efficacy of Ayurveda-based medication for routine treatment of patients will be Researched by Ayurveda Colleges

Maharashtra University of Health Sciences Vice -Chancellor Dr Arun Jamkar  said that Ayurveda colleges in Nashik and Pune will start an Ayurveda-based double blind clinical controlled trial soon. Dr Jamkar was in the city on Saturday as the chief guest for the two-day conference on anaesthesia organised by Tilak Ayurveda College. On the occasion, Jamkar told that in this clinical trial, the participants are divided in two groups and half the patients are given actual medication, while the others are given placebo (a tablet or liquid containing no active medication).
The aim of the trial is to find the efficacy of Ayurveda-based medication for routine treatment of patients. “We are planning to start the trials within the next two months. They would be carried out under the guidance of the MUHS. The project will be funded by Ayurveda, Yoga & Naturopathy, Unani, Siddha and Homoeopathy (Ayush) functioning under the Union ministry of health and family welfare,” he added.
According to Dr Jamkar, six Ayurveda colleges each in Nashik and Pune would be involved in the task. “There are 12 projects that we have planned to take up with different Ayurveda colleges in the state. The double blind clinical controlled trial is one of them. I shall be having a detailed discussion with state director for Ayurveda, Dr Kuldeep Kohli, in this matter,” said Jamkar, adding that around Rs30 lakh has been sanctioned by AYUSH for each of the projects.
Deliberating on the double blind controlled clinical trial, Jamkar said that a group of patients with basic illnesses like cold, cough, urinary tract infection will be chosen for the project. These patients would be monitored by the Ayurveda researchers and consultants.
Jamkar said that the MUHS will also soon come up with an Ayurveda garden ‘Nakshatra’, which will have various species of plants. He said there is an Ayurveda garden in the University of Pune. “However, the garden is lying unused for many years and is not maintained properly. MUHS is willing to adopt the garden and redevelop it. We have sent a letter to the UoP about this. But we are yet to get a response,” he added.
