Care Hospital performs rare cardiac surgery, first time in India

The Hyderabad-based Care Hospital has performed a rare combined cardiac surgery on a young lady admitted with valvular heart problem and abnormal heart rhythm recently.
According to the hospital, heart surgery is conventionally performed by a long incision on the chest. Some innovative techniques are being developed over the past one decade to expose the heart and great vessels trough small incisions in less exposed areas of the chest. The surgery was performed at the group’s hospital at Nampally in Hyderabad by Dr G Usha Rani and Dr Alle Shiva Kumar. The operation was performed through a five centimeter incision underneath the right breast mitral valve replacement and left atrial maze procedure were performed with specially designed instruments for minimally invasive cardiac surgery. Single lung ventilation, which enables the operation to be performed easily, was provided by Dr K Brahmaji Rao.
The hospital claimed that this is for the first time in the country, this type of combined cardiac surgical procedure was performed through such a small incision. The hospital said that apart from using instruments facilitating minimally invasive cardiac surgical procedures, the surgeons’ team used an indigenous long cryo probe to create incisions in the interior regions of the heart which are not easily accessible. They added that the recovery period is very less and the patient can walk freely on first post operative day.
Restoration of heart rhythm along with valve replacement is very important as it improves the quality of patient life post operatively, said Dr C Narsimhan, chief of cardiac electrophysiology, adding that development of this type innovative operative techniques and instruments, will enable them to approach different areas of the heart though small incision over the chest to correct heart rhythm problems.
CARE Hospital, Nampally had so far performed more than 250 maze procedures for conversion of atrial fibrillation to normal sinus rhythm during the last 10 years using different techniques, including surgical maze, radio frequency ablation and cryo ablation.
