On a beautiful blue sky day with the sun brightly casting down upon the earth, shouldn’t it be a given to be outside in it and be active?
We may not have time to cycle or run, but we can just be outside and take a walk or practice yoga or meditation for a few moments. Can’t we?
Isn’t breathing important to our physical, mental, and emotional health? Why don’t we practice the art of breathing when we have a few moments to spare?
During the winter months or rainy season, we are trapped inside and do not get the chance to just BE outdoors. So, what’s stopping us from doing so when the bright yellow sun is high above us? Take a few minutes (or even an hour) to step outside and do what you want. Do you feel like running? Biking? Walking? Meditating? Playing a sport? Whichever it is, it is the self-care that is necessary for your holistic health.
Going to a gym is an essential part of health because it allows us the sense of belonging to something. I encourage clients to be a part of a gym to gain the structure and to have that feeling of being a part of a team. It does make me wonder when people still continue to go to the gym during those warm, sunny, blue sky days. Here they are cycling on a stationary bike INSIDE a sweaty room when they could be filling their lungs with fresh air. Of course any sort of activity and motivation on anyone who is maintaining their activity level should be commended, but they should be encouraged to take part outside and take advantage of their environment. The World is our gym; we should learn to embrace it.
• Use our backyards, or walk to a park and practice yoga
• Sit on your balcony or in your backyard and meditate
• Take a 5-minute brisk walk after work or during your lunch break
Five minutes after work or school is ONLY five minutes. Couldn’t we take out those few minutes each day for our own health? What else take five minutes? Going to the bathroom? Putting away dishes? Sweeping the floor?
What is it that most people do upon arriving home after work or school? They take their shoes off and get comfortable as they turn on their computers or TVs. If they have a few moments to watch TV, couldn’t they very easily take a brisk walk for five minutes instead?
These are the mind shifts that need to be changed as we become more aware with our health and with our healthy minds.
