IPC to work closely with China in 1st 'World Pharmacopoeia Summit' on Nov 18, 19

The Indian Pharmacopoeia Commission (IPC) will soon be part of the worlds first 'World Pharmacopoeia Summit' which is going to be held in Beijing, China from November 18 to 19. This summit is expected to be a meeting point where all the world's top standard setting agencies are expected to deliberate on ways to improve the quality of life by finding newer ways to raise the standard of drugs.
This summit is expected to attract a lot of attention as all the major countries will be present under the same roof representing their ideas and opinions on the global requirements and ways to tackle those needs. The first edition is expected to be attended by almost all the leading pharmacopoeia commissions from the 30 plus pharmacopoeia body in the word.
According to Dr G N Singh, secretary cum scientific director of IPC, “This summit will also give us an opportunity to have one-on-one discussion with other standard setting agencies which may open probabilities of future tie-ups and collaborations with them. As always IPC is looking forward to work with them and share our expertise with the other so that we can all benefit from this and lead to a environment that will encourage in achieving our moto of harmonising global standards.”
One of the main focal points of this summit would be to engage in long and careful consideration to develop common standard for medicines so as to achieve better patient safety. Dr Singh added that special focus will be given to both India and China, as both are considered to be leading powers to reckon with.
“We are looking forward to work closely with Chinese pharmacopoeia, since both of us are emerging counterparts and can share lot of ideas that can support our growth. As of now it is too early to comment on this, however, we do hope that both the governments will play an active role in developing strong working relation with the other which will be mutually beneficial for both the countries.”
As of now IPC have collaboration with other international standard setting associations like United States Pharmacopoeia (USP), the World Health Organisation's (WHO's) International Pharmacopoeia (Ph. Int) etc.
The second edition of the annual summit is going to be held in WHO Geneva, whereas, the third is expected to be held in India in the year 2013. “Initially, we had suggested them to organise the second edition in India but the WHO wanted it to be at Geneva. However, our proposal to have the third edition in India is already under consideration and we are positive that we will be able to host it,” informed Dr Singh.
Among the recent notable developments, IPC recently received NABL accreditation which will enable all the test that are conducted in it's Gaziabad based laboratory to be accredited credibility across the the country and also recognition at the international level.
