An investigation carried out by a non-profit group into University of Miami has revealed that more than a dozen doctors fail to accurately report their earnings from drug companies to the university. Doctors from the university are often allowed to make paid speeches on behalf of the drug companies but are expected to report their earnings to the university which then posts it online. While the university has posted such payments on its website, the investigation conducted by ProPublica compared the figures with those released by a number of drug companies and found that the figures posted by the University of Miami were smaller compared to those published by the drug companies. The organization also revealed that doctors from other universities often participated in such speeches even though they are prohibited by their universities.
“Faculty at a half-dozen other institutions, including division chiefs, also lectured for drug firms in the last two years despite restrictions on such behavior. The University of Pennsylvania, the University of Pittsburgh and the University of Colorado Denver, among others, have launched reviews”, the report said.
