An NGO in Guwahati discovered a 4year old girl abandoned in a shed along with goats. The child weighs barely 8 kilograms (average weight for her age should be 8 kilograms) and is suffering from malnutrition. The NGO brought the girl to a community centre for HIV people. As per rules set by National AIDS Control Organization (NACO), she cannot stay at this community center for more than 15days.2months ago the girl’s mother died from AIDS. She had entrusted the little girl to her paternal uncle and aunt who live about 60 kilometers away from Guwahati in Lower Assam. Records show that in Assam there are about 70 orphans who lost their parents to AIDS. These children cannot be sent to regular orphanages because even they are HIV positive. Chief Minister of Assam, Gogoi, has promised to set up a special shelter for HIV positive orphans. He has also said that till alternative arrangements were made the 4year old girl would stay at the center run by NACO.
